Start with the lounge

The sofa sets the scale of the room, so it is worth deciding first. Measure the wall it will sit against, then subtract for lamps, doorways and walkways before settling on a length. Measure your access too — doorways, hallway turns and stair landings sink more sofa deliveries than room size ever does.

Then the seating around it

Armchairs, tub chairs and occasional chairs to fill out the arrangement, and ottomans that work as footrests, extra seating, or a soft coffee table with a tray on top.

Tables and storage

Coffee, console and side tables in timber, stone and terrazzo, plus buffets and entertainment units. A coffee table generally wants to be about two-thirds the length of the sofa it serves, with 40 to 45cm of walking space between them.
