Round or rectangular
Round tables seat more people in less floor area and suit square rooms, with no corners to walk into. Rectangular tables suit long rooms, seat more at full stretch, and sit flat against a wall when you need the floor back.

Measure the room, not the table
Allow about a metre of clear space around the table so chairs can be pulled out and people can walk behind them. That clearance, rather than the table itself, is usually what decides the size you can take.
