Size it to the furniture, not the room
The most common rug mistake is buying too small. In a living room the rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of every sofa and armchair sit on it — that is what pulls the seating into one arrangement instead of leaving furniture stranded around the edges.
In a bedroom
Either run a rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends past both sides, or use runners down each side. What you want is something soft underfoot exactly where you step out of bed.
