Sizing a replacement shade
As a general rule the shade should be about two-thirds the height of the lamp base, and wide enough at the bottom to conceal the globe and fitting from a seated position. Measure your existing shade's top diameter, bottom diameter and slope height before ordering.
Check the fitting type
Shades attach in different ways — spider fitting, clip-on, or a threaded fitting on the lamp itself. It is the detail most often missed, and the one that decides whether a shade fits at all.
Why a new shade is worth it
Swapping the shade is usually the cheapest way to bring a good lamp back into a room you have redecorated around it, and far quicker than replacing the lamp.
