Layering
Cushions are the cheapest way to change how a room reads, and the easiest thing to change again next season. A useful starting point on a three-seater is two larger cushions at each end and one smaller one off-centre — even numbers spaced symmetrically tend to look staged.
Mixing patterns
One large-scale pattern, one small-scale pattern and one plain in a colour picked out of the other two will get you further than three cushions that match. Texture counts as a pattern: a bouclé or a heavy weave gives you variation without adding another print.
