Hanging height
The centre of a piece generally wants to sit around 145 to 150cm from the floor — eye level for most people standing. Above a sofa, drop it lower: leave roughly 15 to 25cm between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame so the two read as one group rather than two separate things.
Scale
The most common mistake is going too small. A piece above a sofa should span about two-thirds of the sofa's width, either as a single work or as a group hung close together.
